This Dutch farmhouse was renovated by Washington Irving in 1835.  He was the author of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle. A veritable assemblage of styles and design elements, Sunnyside has a Spanish tower based on the Alhambra, weathervanes taken from Dutch architecture and a stepped roof.  Open weekends only.

SLEEPY HOLLOW

This village, just north of Tarrytown, was made famous in 1820 by the Washington Irving story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Called North Tarrytown through most of the 20th century, the village formally changed its name to Sleepy Hollow in 1996 to honor Irving’s legacy.

The oldest operating theater in Westchester County opened in 1885.  In 1901, it became one of the first theaters to show silent movies.

PHILIPSBURG MANOR

This milling, farming and trading complex with well-preserved commercial buildings was originally settled with a land grant from William and Mary in 1693. Today, interpreters in period costume guide visitors through a stone house with 17th–century furnishings, a series of historical gardens, a working water-powered gristmill and fields with historic breeds of animals. Open weekends.

LIGHTHOUSE AT SLEEPY HOLLOW AND KINGSLAND POINT PARK

This non-active lighthouse was built in 1883 to warn ships on the Hudson River away from shoals on the eastern shore. Over 78 years, 12 light keepers and their families lived in the lighthouse, which became automated in the mid 1950s. It was shut down in 1961 when navigation lights were installed on the nearby Tappan Zee Bridge. Tours are offered by the village of Sleepy Hollow. From land, best views are from Kingsland Point Park.

OLD DUTCH CHURCH OF SLEEPY HOLLOW

Built in 1685 and virtually unchanged since then, it is one of the oldest operating churches in New York State. The church's 3-acre burying ground is the supposed roaming grounds of the headless horseman.

KYKUIT: THE ROCKEFELLER ESTATE

This grand house built in 1913 on a promontory with sweeping views of the Hudson River was the country house of the Rockefeller family for three generations. It is a veritable museum of modernist paintings and sculpture by Noguchi, Calder and others. The grounds are beautifully landscaped.

UNION CHURCH OF POCANTICO HILLS

VAN CORTLANDT MANOR

This restored 18th-century working farm showcases the domestic life of a post-Revolution patriot family in the Northeast. The property includes a stone house with period furnishings and traditional gardens, and a tavern on the Albany Post Road that illuminates the history of transportation in the area before railroads.

UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY

This is the oldest military academy in the country. Walk the paths of generals and presidents as you trace the footsteps of our country’s great leaders. Guided tours leave daily from the West Point Visitor Center, and the museum shows cadet life as it has been lived over the past 200 years.
